1920s
Nebraska

In 1923, twenty-three-year-old Artena Christensen committed to an unknown journey as a "lady missionary" with no secured income or accommodations. Now, her personal record of city living as a single woman in the Jazz Age has been rediscovered. The stories on this site faithfully recreate the histories of the people Artena encountered, and the historic Nebraska locales where her diary takes place.

A Girl's Historic
Journey

With the aid of vintage newspapers, records, photos and directories, Artena's world has been thoroughly reconstructed. Experience 1920s streetcar culture, social decorum of the day, watermelon busts and picnics in Antelope Park. The blog also profiles Artena's friends, both before and after their time together.
